Purpose:

  • This position will operate a horizontal/directional drill rig to install underground utilities. The position will communicate with the field operations team to ensure effective and efficient operation of the drill is maintained at all times. The position will direct other field operatives on site under the direction of the Superintendent.

Responsibilities:

  • Operates horizontal directional drill for installation of underground utilities
  • Ensure proper steering based on the noted job preparations and projections
  • Troubleshoots and resolves problems, including switching out bits, replacing MWD tools, accessing component wear and tear, motor weakness and any other failures. These functions are not all inclusive of required operation of directional drilling operation
  • Operates horizontal directional drill in accordance with blueprints and designated plans
  • Complies with applicable safety standards and maintaining a safe working environment
  • Responsible for daily maintenance on truck and boring machine
  • Performs critical care and service to the machine after each use and each day.
  • Adheres to ALL manufacturer provided safety operational procedures and industry safety standards.
  • Operates the drill and provide training and assistance to co-workers
  • Performs routine labor (pot-holing, equipment set-up, conduit/duct/cable placement, set pedestals) as required
  • Communicates effectively with laborers, operators, and mud technicians
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment
  • All other duties as assigned by the Superintendent

Experience:

  • 3+ years of drilling operations, construction, or other related experience
  • Must have experience operating a maxi rig
  • Candidates with specific American Augers 440 experience desired

Skills:

  • Ability to read and understand maps, drawings and diagrams for project build process.
  • Ability to clearly communicate with supervisors and co-workers
  • Ability to use hand tools, power tools, machines, equipment
  • Ability to learn and gain knowledge
  • Ability to follow work orders or receive instructions
  • Ability to adhere to Safety policies and procedures

Physical Requirements:

  • The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required.  This includes hard hat, safety glasses, life vest, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done
  • Walking, stepping, climbing or otherwise moving from one location on the job site to another, and normally involves physically getting into and out of equipment through the use of vertical mounted ladders up to and including 10’ or more in height
  • Visually seeing equipment operations well (either naturally or with corrective lenses)
  • Standing, stooping kneeling, squatting, climbing or sitting for long periods of time
  • Repetitive movements by feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands and back in performance of work
  • Working at elevated heights
  • Lifting 50 lb. objects as required
  • Carrying 50 lb. objects as required
  • Adapting to outdoor conditions and prolonged exposure
  • Remaining calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as dictated by the circumstance of the incident
  • Exposure to working outdoors in all-weather conditions
  • Ability to work more than 40 hours in any given week including weekend assignments and holidays as required

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred, but not required

Licenses or Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license
  • CDL driver’s license is preferred
  • OSHA 10 Certification preferred

Travel:

  • Travel is required
